Effective workouts

Although it comes in a large box (22 x 43 x 12 inches, 56 x 109 x 30 cm), much of the packages is, as you would expect, protective packing. Once taken out, the rowing machine is sleek, and doesn’t take up nearly as much space as I at first thought.As other reviewers have noted, the levels of increasing resistance is, arguably, unnecessary. It’s like a bicycle with 24 gears – the differential between two adjacent levels is marginal. But those levels are there should you need them.Never having used a rowing machine before, I was quite surprised at just how good a workout it gives. The rowing action ensures you are using all your major muscle groups, which means you are going to burn a lot of calories in quite a short time, depending on the resistance level set. And once you get yourself into a rhythm, you’ll burn even more without realising it. It’s very convenient, then, that the machine will display an estimate of calories burned, together with distance and time.I am very impressed with the machine. Even though it is quite expensive, those keen on keeping fit may well find it hits the sweet spot.

Excellent beginner rower

Out of the box this is easy to put together and it folds up really well to save space. The seat moves smoothly and there's a simple screen to give you details such as calories, distance and 'difficulty level'Using it is really simple and although it has levels there's not much difference between the small steps. As mentioned before use is really smooth and it'll give you a good workout.You can connect it up to certain fitness apps through bluetooth to keep your rowing data.Overall, a very good home rowing machine.

Had the rower for just a few days but already very impressed with it. It's a very sturdy piece of kit. Easy to assemble out of the box - says two people required but apart from a slight struggle to extract it from the box (which I didn't want to damage in case I needed to return it), I managed to put it together myself in 25 minutes with the included tools.The rower has a very smooth action and is quiet enough to exercise whilst watching the TV, albeit with the sound turned up a tad (much quieter than the air rower at the gym).The tension settings are perfectly adequate for a good range of abilities, though if you are a serious rower or extreme fitness fanatic the highest setting might not cut it for you. The lower 4 or 5 settings are also a little weak but useful if you haven't done any serious exercise in a while and want to start off gently.The seat is comfortable at first but can make your btm ache after a little while so I just put a small memory foam pad on it and it's fine. I'm 5' 10 1/2" and there is plenty of travel on the seat for me. I've read some people saying that the foot pedals are too big and their feet fall out - this can be remedied by threading the pedal straps through the lower slots in the pedals (they are in the higher slots out of the box).The display takes a bit of mastering as the instructions are a little vague but with a bit of trial and error you can soon work it out. I'm not sure how accurate the calorie counter or distance measure are but I'll only use them for comparison from session to session anyway.To sum up: for the price this is a really solid machine and I expect it to go the distance. If you're serious about your rowing you'll probably want something a bit higher up the league but if you're looking for a rower for general fitness purposes at beginner/intermediate level, buy with confidence.

Good product - couple of niggles - sorted

I considered several spin bikes and rowing machines and settled on this one. I like it.I bought it the Tuesday after Cyber Monday and it arrived on Thursday - nice quick delivery via Yodel.Setting up is quite straightforward. Like previous reviewer, I think bigger diagrams in the guide would have been great, but a little patience means 30mins is about enough time to get it set up.The product is a good weight and feels solid and well built. The computer display is big enough to be easy to read at the finish stage of a stroke. The magnetic mechanism is very quiet and the majority of the noise comes from the sliding of the seat in the drive and recovery. I felt confident straight after setting it up to push up to 40strokes/min.Folding the machine is quite simple - just remove two bolts.[update below]:I've given the product 4 stars for 2 reasons:(1) the pedal strap is just a velcro strap. I've racked up about 10km since receiving the unit and the straps keep coming off my feet. Two straps per foot or a toe/heel block would help keep feet in place during the recovery stage of the stroke.(2) The magnetic load mechanism is low. This means the handlebar has to be kept very low during the stroke. I use a Concept 2 ergometer at the gym and the higher placed flywheel ensures that arms are above the knees throughout the stroke. IMHO that works much better. At the moment I have to keep my arms outside my knees to make this work. I'm only 5'8", for reference.Oh, for those who want to know, the display has no backlight, and the machine is suitable for people at least half a foot taller than me - the monorail is a good length. The seat is soft too, if thats a priority for you. I like the tension and IMHO unless you're a pro it will provide more than enough resistance. At first use the magnetic resistance wasn't very smooth at low resistance, but it seems to be smoother now, and is definitely smooth at higher resistance.I like the product and the wife has decided to give it a go, so can't complain. Recommended if you can engineer a way to keep your feet in, and don't mind having your arms outside your knees.[update - 11th Dec]This review got a comment from JLL. They pointed out that the foot pedals had an extra slot for the strap. I used the lower slot and this provides more security.I've also grown used to the lower arm position so can't complain.5 stars! Recommended

Very good value

I thought I'd leave it a while before reviewing the rowing machine to give an informed opinion, rather than an instant impression.I used to run, used to go to the gym and generally tried to keep reasonably fit but without a great deal of enthusiasm. Apart from a tendency to walk where i had the opportunity the rest of my fitness activities fell away and I gained some weight and generally felt lethargic.Looking for a low impact form of all round exercise I came upon the JLL rowing machine and was impressed with the reviews, both here and elsewhere, but wondered what I'd actually get for what seemed a pretty low price. But, nothing ventured, nothing gained, I put in an order.The machine was delivered promptly and well before the estimated date. I had watched a YouTube video from JLL on how to assemble it and with that, and the enclosed instructions, it was put together in around 40 minutes. The fittings were in a well numbered blister pack so there was no doubting what went where. There was also a small, and probably, easily overlooked information sheet for the computer. The one tiny issue was that one of the knobs had part of it's plastic broken away. It had no effect on the machines usage and was more cosmetic, but a call to JLL had it replaced within a few days.The machine itself is solid and sturdy. The action is smooth and very quiet and, for a beginner like me, even on a low resistance level gives me a decent work out over 20 minutes to half an hour. Because of it's quietness I can entertain - or distract - myself listening to podcasts whilst I work out. I get off after exercise feeling it in my legs, abs, shoulders and arms and having built up a sweat. More importantly I don't dread doing it, which is progress.Two minor niggles. The foot straps could be more robust as occasionally one of my feet will slip out and the bolt holding in the left pedal needs tightening after every couple of work outs, but they are very minor and it would not stop recommending this machine to anyone.It's not a Concept 2 but it's 20% of the price and at what is being asked you really can't go wrong.

some teething issues but excellent

OK so I'm going to be kind. This excellent machine arrived in a rather beaten up box and on assembly the monitor did not register the rowing. A 1st helpful call established that the connecting lead or sensor were the problem. A magnet on the seat passes over a sensor that counts your pulls. They suggested I email pictures which I did. then silence and tel no an unanswered covid message answering machine (no message facility). It took a public post here and several messages to sort out but they did eventually (after first suggesting i disassemble, repack and send it back !!?) posted two replacements for the cables one from monitor the other seat to monitor. The second worked and its now functioning perfectly. It took three weeks but I'm going to be tolerant and put the slowness down to Covid. The good news is the machine is excellent and very well worth the money. There are two design adjustments I'd suggest. I'm tall and the hole from which the cable exits is set a little low so the nylon hits the upper part making more noise than nessary and likely to cause wear. The velcro straps on the footplates are extremely rudimentary and most of the velcro does not engage (last photo). Both minor issues and I'm extremely pleased (and more muscular as a result). I wanted a folding machine but actually this stands happily upright just lifting it staight up at 90 degees without the fuss of undoing the two knobs to lift only the seat bar. Its sturdy and monitor has various settings easily scrolled through pressing the big buttom till you get your favourit (I just use stroke count). Press and hold to zero settings.

Really pleased I bought it !!!

Firstly a warning - it is very low. I have made blocks to raise the rear & mid stand points as I struggled to sit without them.The machine is doing what I bought it for ie Good exercise without leaving the house. It was quite easy to build but I don’t fold it. It is easy to move as it has castors so it lives behind the couch.

Owned for a Month, Very Happy

Assembly takes 15 mins and is just a few nuts and bolts, far easier than IKEA furniture and a basic spanner is included.I've owned it for a month now and have gone from level 1 & 2 settings to 6 & 10 for 20 min work outs. A definite marked improvement!There is no need to bother collapsing the rowing machine, just stand it up, which takes up less space and because of the wheels is easy to move around on carpet.The rowing action doesn't make any noise (it uses magnets not a fan), the bit that does is the seat rolling backwards and forwards.My only minor gripe is that I feel the seat rolling mechanism could have been tighter, there is a lot of slop in the roller bearings allowing the seat to move around.That said, I'm happy with it and was one quarter of that of a concept 2. I've already seen a massive improvement in my ability to use the machine and frankly quite enjoy it.Tip: Look up "The perfect beginners workout" by Dark Horse Rowing on YouTube. A simple workout you can start with as you build your strength up.

Got to be the bargain of the year for me

This is my first foray into rowing machines so I didn't want to spend too much money, at £165 this looked like a good compromise between price and quality. Then, when I unboxed it, I realised there's very little compromise on quality indeed, this is a properly sturdy piece of kit. The assembly took me 45 minutes and the assembly instructions seemed quite daunting when I first looked at them; however, I took my time and it was no more complicated than something like a Lego Technics kit. The instruction recommend that two people are required to assemble the machine but I managed completely fine on my own, it even comes with all the tools (spanners and a crosshead screwdriver) you need to do the assembly.The machine has a built in LCD display (batteries are included) that shows various bits of information from stroke rate to calories used. I know this isn't as extensive as some more expensive machines but I'm not aiming for the Olympics so I'm fine with that.I'm 5 feet 10 inches tall and weigh around 13.5 stone, all solid muscle obviously :-), and the stroke length seems ideal for me. I haven't had much of a proper go on it yet so I'll update this review in a few weeks and let you know how I'm getting along, but, for now, very impressed.Update 5th November 2017: Had the machine a few weeks now and I'm still impressed with it. I have settled on a varied regime, some days I do 6 * 500m sprints and other days I go for 5km endurance. In all I'm doing around 20km per week with 2 days a week resting. When sprinting I'm getting up to 40 strokes per minute and, sometimes, the machine slips along the floor at the end of each stroke (but I do weight 13.5 stones so it's not such a surprise); I use the machine in the garage which has a very smooth, painted floor; I may put an exercise mat under the machine to stop the slippage.There are some comments saying that there isn't enough tension, there is certainly enough on my machine, I'm running it on a tension setting of 5 and after a couple of kilometres I have got a good sweat on and by the end of a 5km ro, I can only just walk (I soon recover though).If I had to be really picky I would say that the computer is a bit basic, it only really counts strokes, the 'calories used' display can't be very accurate because it depends on your weight, heart rate, age etc and the machine doesn't know about any of those. Having said that, this machine is so competitively priced I can't really complain about something like that.So, overall, I have no problem at all with keeping the 5 star rating I originally gave it.

Excellent value for money

Excellent value for money. Fits well in the corner of the room folded up and is very smooth. Has enabled me to fit a little excercise into a packed schedule for a lot less than a year's gym membership.

Excellent, sturdy machine very suitable for home use. The magnet controlling the read out monitor was missing but the after care team speedily sorted this out with a replacement part. The machine is in daily use by by my husband and self. We are both pensioners.

Easy to put together, excellent for small spaces!

Fantastic product! Easy to assemble, good quality and quiet. The only downside to the item is its digital display - it only displays distance in Km, but its not the end of the world. I highly recommend this product.
