Hyrox Doubles: How Does It Work?

Hyrox Doubles: How Does It Work?

If you have spent any time in the functional fitness community lately, you have undoubtedly heard of HYROX. Billed as the "World Series of Fitness Racing," a standard individual HYROX event is a brutal, high intensity test of mental and physical fortitude: an 8km run interspersed with 8 grueling functional workout stations designed to deliver a true full body workout.

But what if you aren't ready to tackle the full arena entirely on your own? Enter HYROX Doubles.

The Doubles division allows you to take on the exact same course alongside a training partner. It is the ultimate test of shared pacing, communication, and functional fitness. But don't let the idea of a partner fool you into thinking it's an easy ride. Whether your current fitness level is that of an elite competitor or a dedicated enthusiast, understanding how this event works will entirely change how you approach your conditioning.

If you are looking to buy high-quality fitness equipment to start building your training base, or you want to upgrade your home workouts to prepare for race day, understanding the unique mechanics of this team division is critical.

What is the Hyrox Doubles Format?

At its core, the HYROX Doubles format follows the exact same blueprint as the solo race. You and your partner must complete 8 x 1 Kilometre Runs and 8 Functional Workout Stations. The standard order of the race never changes:

  1. 1km Run
  2. 1,000m SkiErg
  3. 1km Run
  4. 50m Sled Push
  5. 1km Run
  6. 50m Sled Pull
  7. 1km Run
  8. 80m Burpee Broad Jumps
  9. 1km Run
  10. 1,000m Rowing
  11. 200m Kettlebell Farmers Carry
  12. 1km Run
  13. 100m Sandbag Lunges
  14. 1km Run
  15. 100 Wall Balls

The Golden Rules of Doubles: You Go, I Go

While a relay team splits the actual distance of the race entirely, a Doubles team works on a "You Go, I Go" system. This comes with two strict, non-negotiable rules that catch many first-time racers off guard:

1. The Stay-Together Running Rule

You do not get to split the running. Both athletes must run the full 8km distance side-by-side.

The official rulebook states that partners must remain within 5 seconds of each other at all times on the track. The timing chips on your shoes track your proximity automatically. If you separate by more than 5 seconds, your team faces a costly 1-minute time penalty per infraction. If you hit four infractions, you are disqualified. Therefore, your race pace is dictated entirely by the steady speed of the slower runner.

2. Splitting the Workstations

When you enter the "ROXzone" (the workout station area), the rules change. Only one athlete can actively work at a time.

While Partner A is pulling the sled, rowing, or lunging, Partner B must wait in the designated support area. You can switch as many times as you like, and you can split the repetitions or meters however you choose. You could split a 1,000m row perfectly as 500m each, or a stronger athlete could tackle 70% of the heavy sled push to protect their partner’s legs for the next run. The only rule is that the station must be entirely completed before both of you exit together.

The Available Categories

You can enter HYROX Doubles in three distinct pairing options:

  • Men’s Doubles (Both partners are male)
  • Women’s Doubles (Both partners are female)
  • Mixed Doubles (One male, one female partner)

HYROX Doubles Weights

Before you register or purchase your home fitness equipment online to train, you need to know which division you are entering. HYROX offers standard Open Doubles and Pro Doubles divisions.

The distance always remains 8km, but the physical weight loads increase significantly in the Pro tiers.

Note on Weights: Men's and Mixed doubles teams compete using standard Men's Open weights. Women's doubles teams compete using Women's Open weights. If you choose to step up to the Pro Doubles division, the weights at the stations increase significantly.

Station Transitions & Equipment Rules

HYROX enforces strict rules regarding equipment usage to guarantee fair play and safety across the arena floor. The core foundation of the Doubles division is that only one partner may handle the equipment or perform repetitions at any given time. To prevent costly time penalties, both athletes must fully understand the explicit transition and spacing rules mandated at each of the eight functional stations:

1. SkiErg (1,000m)

  • The Rule: While one athlete is actively pulling, the non-working partner must stand entirely on the designated team doubles mat.
  • The Transition: You are strictly forbidden from touching the machine or the handles until your partner has completely stepped off the platform and a clear handoff is made.

2. Sled Push (50m)

  • The Rule: The resting partner must stay directly behind the athlete actively pushing the sled.
  • The Transition: You cannot walk in front of the sled or step into adjacent lanes, as this constitutes an obstruction penalty. Both partners must travel the full length of the track together, crossing the line at each end before a physical swap can take place.

3. Sled Pull (50m)

  • The Rule: Only the working athlete is permitted to stand inside the athlete’s box and handle the rope. The non-working partner must remain stationed behind them.
  • The Transition: The resting partner cannot touch or help manage the rope at any point. Furthermore, both athletes must stay at the same end of the track where the active pulling is taking place; you cannot walk down the lane ahead of your sled.

4. Burpee Broad Jumps (80m)

  • The Rule: The resting partner must always remain positioned behind the athlete currently moving.
  • The Transition: To swap, you can either line up directly side-by-side or step forward cleanly through your partner’s legs after they land a jump. Remember, every single repetition must strictly start with a chest-to-floor burpee and finish with a two-foot simultaneous takeoff and landing.

5. Rowing (1,000m)

  • The Rule: Just like the SkiErg, the non-working teammate must wait patiently on the designated doubles mat.
  • The Transition: Do not touch the rowing handle, frame, or foot straps until the working partner has completely slipped their feet out and cleared the seat area.

6. Kettlebell Farmers Carry (200m)

  • The Rule: The resting partner must walk directly behind the teammate carrying the load, ensuring they do not obstruct other racers on the track.
  • The Transition: To hand over the workload, the active athlete must place the kettlebells completely flat on the floor. The resting partner must then pick them up cleanly from that exact resting position. Passing the weights directly from hand-to-hand is illegal.

7. Sandbag Lunges (100m)

  • The Rule: The non-working partner must walk closely behind the athlete lunging. Under no circumstances is the sandbag permitted to touch the floor during the entire 100 meters.
  • The Transition: When swapping roles, the sandbag must be transferred directly between partners back-to-back. Passing or throwing the sandbag forward to your partner is a rule violation.

8. Wall Balls (75-100 Reps)

  • The Rule: The resting partner must stand inside the target rig facing the athlete performing the repetitions.
  • The Transition: You can switch tasks at any point, but the ball must either be passed forward at waist height or dropped cleanly to the floor for the other athlete to collect. Remember, every single rep must start from a deep squat, with males throwing to the upper target line and females throwing to the lower line (including in the Mixed division).

How to Train and Prep Your Home Gym for HYROX Doubles

To secure a competitive finishing time and reduce the risk of mid-race injury or burnout, you cannot rely entirely on commercial gym availability. High-level hybrid athletes know that building a robust setup at home is paramount to mastering station transitions under fatigue.

Here is how you should structure your space, even if you are trying to save space in a tight area:

1. Commercial Running Machines & Cardio Ergometers

Since running accounts for over 50% of your total race time, your aerobic engine is your biggest asset. Supplementing your outdoor track work with high-quality running machines is paramount for practicing aggressive interval pacing and building the raw stamina needed to survive the later stages of the course.

If you are training from home, the JLL Pegasus Connected Folding Treadmill offers an ideal race-simulation platform. Boasting a powerful 2.5 HP motor and a cushioned running deck to reduce joint impact during heavy training blocks, it allows you to precisely track your speed, distance, and split times on a stable, gym-quality surface that folds away cleanly when the workout is done.

When it comes to tackling the 1,000m row, your metabolic pacing is everything. To practice this transition seamlessly at home, look for high-quality rowing machines that mimic the progressive resistance of the race floor.

The JLL R300 Electro-Magnetic Resistance Rowing Machine is the ultimate tool for this. Its advanced magnetic resistance system ensures a whisper-quiet rowing machine workout, allowing you to replicate the high-stakes, explosive physical activity of Station 5 without disturbing your household.

If you want to pack extra cardio into your regular workout routine but have limited floor space, you don't have to limit your options. High-quality compact equipment is a brilliant alternative to build that crucial lactic acid tolerance in your quads without overloading your joints.

The Foldable Magnetic Stationary Exercise X-Bike Pro is engineered exactly for this type of high-intensity conditioning in tight spaces. Featuring a smooth magnetic belt-drive system and up to 16 levels of quiet magnetic resistance, it allows you to crank up the tension to simulate the leg-burning fatigue of a heavy sled push right from your living room.

Best of all, its unique X-frame design folds down to nearly half its size when you are done, making it easy to slide behind a sofa or wheel into a cupboard so your living space doesn't look like a commercial gymnasium. Plus, it seamlessly connects to the SunnyFit App via Bluetooth so you can track your pacing and metrics side-by-side with your partner.

2. Mastering Strength: Weights and Resistance

While HYROX focuses heavily on pushing and pulling loads relative to your own body weight, building raw structural power is vital. Investing in the best home gym weights—including a solid setup of free weights like Olympic barbells and heavy free-standing dumbbells—ensures your upper and lower body are conditioned for the heavy carries. While isolation movements like bicep curls won't be explicitly tested on the floor, building overall upper body strength will keep your posture upright during the exhausting 200m Farmers Carry.

If your training takes place in a standard living room and you need to look after your floors, you can supplement your iron weights with heavy-duty resistance bands to mimic the constant tension of the sled pull without needing massive steel sled tracks outside.

3. Kettlebells, Sandbags, and Wall Balls

These are the core essentials for any functional home setup. To practice seamless "You Go, I Go" handoffs with your partner, you need the exact tools:

  • A pair of competition kettlebells (16kg, 24kg, or 32kg) to master the grueling 200m Farmers Carry.
  • A dedicated functional fitness sandbag to practice walking lunges across your garden or driveway.
  • A target-ready medicine ball/wall ball to build the muscular endurance required to survive the 100-rep grand finale.

Winning Strategies for Race Day

By gradually increasing your training volume and practicing together, you will find a natural rhythm. Keep these three core strategies in mind.

  1. Don’t Split 50/50 Blindly: If one partner has superior grip strength, let them take a 60m block on the Farmers Carry while the other rests fully. Play to your individual strengths.
  2. Switch Before Failure: On high-fatigue stations like the Sled Pull or Wall Balls, do not wait until your muscles give out to switch. Plan micro-sets (e.g., blocks of 15 Wall Balls or 12.5-meter sled segments) to keep the momentum incredibly fast and the recovery windows short.
  3. Appoint a Running Leader: Avoid running text-book style side-by-side if it causes pacing friction. Have the slightly slower runner set the pace in front, while the stronger runner acts as the engine pushing from directly behind to ensure you never violate the 5-second proximity rule.

Frequently Asked Questions About HYROX Doubles

Q: Can one partner do an entire workout station by themselves?

Yes. While you cannot split the 8km of running, there is no rule stating you must split the work at the stations evenly. If Partner A is a rowing powerhouse and Partner B is nursing a minor shoulder tweak, Partner A can legally complete all 1,000 meters on the rower alone while Partner B rests on the mat. The only requirement is that you enter and exit the station together.

Q: How do age groups work in the Doubles division?

Your competitive age group is determined by the average age of both partners on the day of the race. For example, if you are 31 and your partner is 41, your average age is 36. This places your team into the 35–39 age bracket.

Q: What happens if my partner and I get separated on the run?

HYROX enforces a strict 5-second proximity rule on the running track, monitored automatically by your timing chips. If you separate by more than 5 seconds, your team will receive a 1-minute time penalty. You are allowed a maximum of three proximity penalties during a race; a fourth infraction results in an automatic disqualification (classified as "Out of Competition").

Q: Which weights are used in the Mixed Doubles division?

In the Mixed Doubles category (one male, one female), the team must use the standard Men's Open weights for all pulling, pushing, and carrying stations. The only exception is Station 8 (Wall Balls): both partners throw the same weight ball, but the male athlete must hit the higher 10-foot target line while the female athlete targets the lower 9-foot line.

Q: Is HYROX Doubles easier than competing as a Solo individual?

Cardiovascularly, yes. Because you can alternate and rest during the grueling workout stations, your heart rate has a chance to drop, allowing you to maintain a much higher power output when it is your turn to work. However, it introduces a unique mental challenge: you are only as fast as your slowest runner, meaning communication, pacing strategy, and synchronized transition dynamics are what truly make or break your finish time.
